Camp Jam USA

Friday August 25th, 2006

For two weeks this summer I had the distinct pleasure to act as a counselor and instructor with the Detroit version of Camp Jam USA. Held at Keller Middle School in Royal Oak, Camp Jam provides teen musicians from ages 11 to 17 with a week long opportunity to learn how to Rock 'n' Roll from music professionals.

Our instructional staff included Katie Skowronski from the Syreens on Bass, Brandon Creasman from the Matt Keil Band and Brando and Friends on Guitar, Marcus McGlowan from numerous bands on Drums while yours truly handled the keyboard and vocal instruction. Steve Black from WRIF handled the recording and music business chores while Niko from the Gypsy Strings, Brant from Rootstand and Ben of the Cass Avenue Ramblers acted as group counselors.

Master class sessions were held that included Liberty DaVitto from Billy Joel's band, Derek St. Holmes of the Ted Nugent band and Camp Jam co-founder Jeff Carlisi from .38 Special.

Camp Jam supplies kids with equipment and tutoring and a chance to perform in front of friends and family during an intensive week long camp. It isn't so much about music lessons as it is about teaching cooperation and teamwork in a performing band situation.

All of us had a great time working with the kids and hope to do it again next year. If you're interested in finding out more take a look at www.campjamusa.com.
