I am interpreting ‘equipment’, here – because I am a writer – in terms of practical knowledge and its ‘apparatuses’; in terms of what their usage teaches; in terms of what users thereby internalise (in terms of expertise), and the actional potential which they also suggest. I am inclined to suppose, in addition, that widespread and repeated uses of ‘equipment’ are impressed, in terms of actional potential, ‘somewhere in the brain’ of users. To take up Jameson’s (1991) borrowed term, ‘cognitive mapping’, I would add that technological change, and repeated access to the ‘apparatuses’ and ‘equipment’ linked to it, is likely to involve a degree of cognitive re-mapping, or re-configuring.
