Is there a significant difference in the antenna heights between transmitting nodes? This difference is not captured in the Friis equations, but is a parameter in the two-ray model. In the case where LOS does not hold and there are path obstructions between nodes, the lognormal shadowing model is probably best suited. The geometry of the scenario being modeled is driven by acceptable separation distance between transmitter and receiver. Ultimately, this is driven by the receiver sensitivity of the radios being modeled and the maximum path loss that can be incurred.

The company provides a suite of software tools for network designers and administrators. But its flagship product is OPNET Modeler, which is a software tool for network M&S that was originally developed by the company’s founder as a graduate project while at the Massachussetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

The approach used by the common network simulators and described in [18] is to pre-compute a data set of multipath components that are time correlated based on time-averaged power, maximum Doppler frequency, and Ricean K factor. This sequence is constructed such that it can be repeated without discontinuities and large simulations may repeat the sequence multiple times as necessary. The statistical validity of this approach is demonstrated in [18]. The effects of large-scale fading are also incorporated into this model as affecting the mean received power and hence the mean of the Ricean or Rayleigh distributed multipath components.
